Ban the old, dry methods (2021): Graphite drawings on Fabriano Pergamon paper
Ban the old, dry methods is an excerpt from a larger ongoing project, that emerges from an engagement with the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden’s permanent collection. The work is centred around the ways in which science and the State have viewed the body of the individual, and how in turn such perspectives are co-opted by consequent political regimes, amongst other structures of power. Addressing the museum’s founding ideology which stressed on seeing and consequently knowing our bodies as the cornerstones of keeping assuredly healthy, without a shadow of doubt, each drawing draws from three key aspects of the collection: the objects on display, the written descriptions, and the English audioguide. Either instruction or proclamation, the certainty of these statements that are now displaced, build a belief system parallel to the one that the museum and its collection was founded on.
The Dictionary of Gardening (2019): Intaglio prints and heat transfers on zinc plates
Printed at Atelier Prati, Bangalore, India.
In a series of volumes titled The Dictionary of Gardening (The Encyclopaedia of Horticulture, published in London in 1887), George Nicholson teaches the reader everything they need to know about tending to plants. Justifying his every directive, the author explains that plants do not know how to grow within their limits — for instance, how to root correctly, grow straight and aesthetically, understand their optimum size and shape, and so on. Parallel to this, the Dictionary moves into sections which address the fact that we must constantly save the plant, not only from its own lack of understanding but also from everything that could attempt to cause it harm. What’s interesting is that this dialogue that the author is ‘teaching’ you to have (or improve on) is based solely on aesthetic principles, as opposed to those of intimacy — care that keeps them alive for example, or grief felt upon their death. In fact, often, his description of caring for the ivory handle of a budding knife seems more intimate than his description of the plant itself. This brings to the fore a larger question — why is such a dialogue struck at all and what does such a mutually tamed relationship bring? Select pages from this series of books are extracted and reproduced onto etching plates as drawings and transfers. In reproducing specific pages of the book — one that was originally produced using metal plate engravings and a letterpress — the information is brought back, tracing parallel processes and materials, and allowing what is being said to be recontextualised. www
