Mojahid Musa (b. 1990, Dhaka) presents his first solo exhibition, In No Sense, an expansive body of work comprising paintings and sculptures. Trained in sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Chittagong, Musa’s practice has undergone a decisive transformation over the past several years—shaped as much by global circumstance as by sustained material inquiry.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Musa was primarily engaged in producing large-scale sculptural works. The years of lockdown, however, imposed both physical and psychological constraints that redirected his practice inward. In this period of enforced stillness, his sculptural language shifted in scale and sensibility. Working in isolation with clay, Musa began producing smaller hybrid forms - objects that feel provisional, experimental, and quietly animated. These early terracotta and found-object sculptures were first exhibited in 2021 and later evolved into larger installations shown in Dubai and at the Dhaka Art Summit in 2023.
Experimentation lies at the core of Musa’s methodology. His sculptures emerge from what he describes as “sitting with clay”, a process without a predetermined outcome. Forms develop through touch, repetition, and play, as he tests combinations of shapes and materials until a moment when the object seems to assert its own autonomy. At that point, the sculpture is allowed to exist as an individual entity, no longer subject to intervention. This openness to chance introduces an element of accident into the work, where form is not imposed but discovered.
Musa’s paintings follow a similarly material-driven logic. Drawing inspiration from prehistoric cave paintings, they are created by pushing wet clay through net-like fabric. Once dried, these fragile surfaces are pasted onto board. The resulting images are shaped entirely by the properties of natural clay - its density, texture, and subtle colour variations. The works evoke a shared human impulse to mark, trace, and remember.
Found materials play a significant role across Musa’s practice. Collected during his travels, these include dead tree branches, bones, snake skin, fur, machine parts, and discarded industrial and commercial objects. His use of waste reflects a concern with cycles of consumption and abandonment, as well as an ethical engagement with what society leaves behind. Technically knowledgeable yet deliberately open-ended, Musa embraces a spirit of jugaad - a resourceful, fearless approach that privileges process over polish and allows meaning to emerge through making.
Influenced by the material sensibilities of Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, and Nawa Kohei, whom he apprenticed with in Japan, Musa departs from their monumental gloss in favour of vulnerability and improvisation. In No Sense plays on the idea of “innocence” as a conceptual framework: a way of approaching an extremely fraught socio-political present with openness rather than certainty.
In a globally connected world that promises mobility and exchange, movement remains unevenly distributed and deeply hierarchical. National borders regulate bodies with unequal force, granting ease of passage to some while casting others as threats to national security. Migration, framed as crisis or risk, becomes less a question of movement than of control. Yet lived experience increasingly contradicts these rigid frameworks. Cultural exchange, digital circulation, and displacement, voluntary or forced, have produced identities that are layered, hybrid, and continuously constructed. It is within this paradox that Musa’s work resonates, asserting hybridity not as an anomaly but as an inevitable condition of contemporary existence.
